What is a sexual assault forensic exam (i.e. a rape test kit)?Sexual assault forensic exams are procedures in which Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) collect biological and physical evidence from survivors. They are time sensitive and are best conducted in the immediate aftermath or within 72 hours of an assault. Rape test kits are critical pieces of biological and physical evidence in law enforcement investigations and are necessary for survivors’ health. Survivors can opt out of any part of the procedure, and they have autonomy over the evidence.

What happens during a sexual assault forensic exam (SAFE)?A health care provider will ask general questions about your health and the assault, and they will try to figure out what they need to do to examine you. The provider will look for injuries on the skin, tender areas, and marks on your skin. If there are visible injuries, the provider will ask to take photographs of them as evidence. Health care provider will also collect evidence related to what happened during the assault such as swabs from the mouth, body, genitals, or rectum. Other data can be taken from fingernail scrapings, foreign matter, or clothing. In general, try not to bathe, shower, brush your teeth, or go to the bathroom after an assault. Try not to change your clothes. If you need to, put your clothes in a clean bag and bring them with you to the treatment center/emergency room.
